Kathleen Glasgow's Girl in Pieces is not an easy read in terms of content. However, if you're able to make it through-- it serves as a very raw and real portrait of a young girl struggling with mental health. Glasgow doesn't shy away from the true nature of the struggles depicted in Charlie, never romanticizing the way you so often see. As you read, you see the way Charlie's struggles affect her ability to form lasting relationships with anyone in her life, highlighting real-time side effects of mental health struggles. I can't say this will be true for everyone (as everyone's experiences are different), but Girl in Pieces will make you feel understood in one way or another. Glasgow just gets it.

Warning slight spoilers. I did not finish this book because of the slow plot.  I absolutely loved around the first 100 pages of her in the mental hospital you could really understand how she felt it. It felt like the best poem I’ve ever read until she left the hospital. Once she left the hospital it got very repetitive explaining why she didn’t want to take a shower about 100 times I also couldn’t relate on a personal level so that could also effect how I felt about it. They also sort of include deep explanation of self harm, family trauma, family death, friends trama, suicidal thoughts, sexual abuse and mention of drugs, smoking, and  alcohol. I was reading it with a friend we highlighted and talked about it but it wasn’t very clear or good after she left the hospital. But I would recommend reading the first 100 pages because it was really good if the author just left it there it would have been much better even without the clear thorough ending.

Always remember: You are not alone.
This book is very well written. It’s awe-inspiring. The feelings and emotions are described perfectly.
HOWEVER! Before you read this make sure you are aware of the topics it covers and how it does that. This book is a living, breathing trigger. Make sure you are in the right headspace to read this, especially if you have firsthand experience with the topics discussed in Charlie’s story.

It is dark but ends well and is something you might yell at the characters at at times but is really good
