This one feels really mixed to me because it feels like two completely different books smashed together. I really enjoyed the first half from the pov view of the vampire, but I'm also aware that there's not much that I felt that was stricklingly original in that bit. It read a lot like interview with the vampire which is why I enjoyed it. But it did have it's moments where I really liked it. Then we got to modern day and it kind of became any other literary fiction genre novel. It just felt boring and like I've read this story before. This is also very much a covid novel which may be a pro or may be a con depending on who you are. So my opinion is mixed, if it were just the first half 5/5. The main characters don't meet until the last hour of an 8 hour audiobook. Given I picked it up based on the back cover description I expected more

This is a haunting story of love, lust, and loss following two perspectives with a time jump and overlap. I think the overall messages are about the loss of a mother, slowly dying in hospital, and the effect that has on a family. Vampirism in the novel definitely makes notes on the female body as both powerful and objectified. The Buenos Aires setting, both historical and contemporary, was excellent, and I enjoyed the writing style. It reminded me a bit of some other Latin American fiction I’ve read recently like Smoking in Bed and Tender Is the Flesh. I’d definitely read from this author again.

feels like an excellent first draft - a lot is left unexplained and unexplored, which both adds to the mystery of the book and rushes what could be a much more beautiful, complex, and compelling story

SUCH an interesting book wow. i wasn’t expecting such a deep look into the grief of having a sick parent and the ways you watch this person you’ve known so well all your life slowly disappear. alongside this intense look into terminal illness, you also have this incredible and unique look into immortality and the way trauma causes you to slowly lose your humanity. also sexy vampire lady killing people slays

A lackluster vampire novel that somehow makes the human character more interesting than the vampire. The characters were just not good enough to hold my attention and the story was disappointing.
