I have been captivated by Elizabeth’s story since reading a novel fashioned as a diary of hers when I was in grade school. As I read Weir’s novels of the Queens, I was incredibly eager to read her characterization of Elizabeth. I went to great lengths to obtain this book. And it was so worth it because I loved every minute of it!

This book is much better than her first attempt at fiction, probably due to the fact that there is more history and documentation on Queen Elizabeth I than on Lady Jane Grey. I have always been a big fan of Weir's non-fiction, and have been pleasantly suprised by her fiction writing.

This was my first novel by Alison Weir and I loved every page of it. If you are fans of Philippa Gregory you will love this story. Alison Weir dives a little deeper into her characters lives. It was amazing. I will definitely read more of Alison Weir's books.

I have definite mixed feelings about this novel.

First quarter: It was okay, just getting into it.
Second quarter: Really enjoying this.
Third quarter: Not as riveting, but still a good read.
Last quarter: Bored. Skim read to finish.

I keep thinking about this because while I genuinely did like the book there were some points that I was like "come on did this REALLY happen" and was still thinking that until the end with the author's note.

I hate when author's feel like they have to add this on to the end like "oh hey I wrote this but um sorry if I took some fictional liberties with these historical events". Okay sure Jan, we know that already because it's called historical fiction for a reason?

My thoughts are so jumbled right now and maybe I'll have something more coherent later, but I think all in all I did enjoy learning more about Elizabeth I, but some of Alison Weir's "fictional liberties" were questionable at best, and just plain false at worst.
