Started reading in January, and I finally finished it! I really liked it, but I will admit that it is a bit of work to read something like this. Would recommend to people who like French culture/history and a challenge!

Edmond Dantès >>>>>

It took me more than three years to finish this book because I NEVER wanted it to end.

Dumas, by creating Edmond Dantès, portrayed the perfect INTJ character, intimidating, with his god complex, his superiority to everyone, who perfectly portrays the determination but also the duality of a human being, and who can only be destroyed by HIS OWN SELF. I can not imagine a character that even comes close to the perfect complexity of Monte Cristo.

Long but mostly worth it for what is alleged as the pinnacle of revenge stories. Would not read again though.

Okay, hear me out… I know a lot of people love this book. Please don’t hate me for straight up 3-starring it. I was hooked at the beginning, enjoyed the dramatic ending, but the middle of this book was full of boring and pointless subplots and I couldn’t make myself care about them. I understand how everything comes together in the end, but man. The middle of this book lost me. I also didn’t feel that the characterization of Monte Cristo was all that great. I enjoyed when we got to see inside his head, but for the majority of this book, he is a mysterious stranger to the reader. That didn’t work for me. I’m glad I read this behemoth, but it is sadly not a new favorite for me, and I doubt I will ever feel compelled to reread it. It feels like a reading accomplishment, at least!

Officially my new fave classic. This is about Edmond Dantes who gets betrayed and wrongfully imprisoned for 14 years until he escapes prison, finds treasure, and uses his newfound money and power to commit revenge against those who betrayed him.

Reading this felt like being a little kid again staying up all night just to finish a book. This was PACKED with adventure - betrayal, secret treasure, bandits, corruption, murder, history, and so much more. This took me to different places and different timelines. Reading this just felt so magical and I would happily read it again!

My absolute fav about this book is the climax. When his enemies started experiencing his taste of revenge, it was so satisfying and fast-paced. Loved every minute reading it. Dumas didn't waste a single page of paper!

It felt like such a deep dive into human emotions as well. It had Monte Cristo's kindness that morphed into hatred and vengefulness. Through the multiple characters, we start to see greed, jealousy, mercy, and forgiveness.

Overall, this was such a perfect book. It had everything - the historical and cultural context, the adventurous plot, the magical vibe, the lyrical words, and the lessons we learn from each character.
