DNF

Alexandre Dumas was a prolific writer and, although I've read other novels of his such as The Black Tulip, The Three Musketeers and it's sequel Twenty Years After, The Count of Monte Cristo just did not meet my expectations.

Unfortunately, at 45%, I closed the book and put in back in my library bag.

“And gradually, like water-springs dried by summer’s heat which, when autumn clouds gather, slowly grow moist again and begin to trickle drop by drop, so the Count of Monte Cristo felt the stirrings in his bosom of the old bitterness which all those years ago had filled the heart of Edmond Dantès to overflowing.”

I must say that for an abridged work, the one isn't half bad. I did, however, feel that there were some essential details left out, but that is true with any abridgment. Definitely a great story and after having read both abridged and unabridged, it really doesn't matter which you choose, just so long as you read it.

This one took a while to read. It contains significantly more than the movie, so I got to experience a lot more of the story. Even if it wandered a bit, and didn't resolve some of the lesser characters that I wanted it to, it was good. The story was told from the lesser characters mentioned in parts, and so I grew attached to them only to find out we don't get to hear how they got a long. Oh well.

Don't provoke a man to the point of no return. He'll turn back but be more vicious than ever before. That's exactly how I felt about Edmond Dantes - a character who hooked me from the very first chapter. After just reading the initial chapters, I went through a series of emotions like pain, sadness, hatred, anger, and pity. This book took me through an emotional roller coaster ride, and I'd gladly relive it again.

The author did an excellent job at portraying the personalities of each character in the story, with Dantes's character development being the most significant. Throughout the story, he transforms from a naive young boy into a vengeful adult, frequently questioning morality, and orchestrating calculated schemes to destroy those who had wronged him in the past.

This book made me rethink whether taking justice into one's own hands is morally justified. The pacing was excellent. Slow and fast enough for me. I rarely got bored throughout the plot (except for some French history parts

I listened to an audiobook of this book, and though I doubt I would be able to get through a physical copy, I was delighted by the characters and caricatures in this story. The plot was engaging from start to finish, and you could almost feel all the pieces being slotted into place as the Count's revenge plot unfolded. Slowburning, classic revenge - gorgeous.
