Really enjoyed the combination of magic and history in this book. It made the witchcraft and vampireism seem more realistic somehow. Excited to read book #2!

I love this book and series! It is a book I've read over and over again. At least once a year I reread the series. I am so excited about the tv show. I have a feeling they will do right by the books!!

I couldn’t believe it when I looked and realized I was only at 30%. Just felt like a slog. Diana seemed willfully ignorant to a dangerous level and I don’t know why a 1500 year old vampire would be interested in her. Like that gap is just ridiculous. I thought this was going to be something else but it was starting a Twilight slide for me which is not what I was looking for. Also needed an editor willing to make some cuts, it’s really long for what it is and most of what I read was just her going to the library and rowing and drinking old wine.

I started this book while hungover on New Year's and was able to mindlessly burn through about half of it in one day - so that's probably telling of the level of complexity this book has.
I initially really liked the setting and the potential historic aspects, but around page 350 or so I thought to myself "Am I just reading an adult version of Twilight with the DaVinci Code sprinkled on top?" I continued to feel that way until the end of the book, and even though I liked some of the plot elements, I was really disappointed with the character development. Yet another fast-paced, magical book that (I felt) started off strong and then the second half was rushed and overly casual.
