I’d seen a few really good reviews of this and had it on my radar to get at some point and was so excited when I stumbled on it in a charity shop while away in York that I cradled it around the shop. Despite my excitement, it had been a while since I’d heard about this and couldn’t remember the plot, but I knew I must have been impressed as it was lingering on my notes app in my “top ten book wants”.

The book starts with a friendship with Jack and Rachel, who meet in Cork whilst both working in a bookstore during university. They are two young twenty somethings, and spend an unforgettable year living together which the blurb references as “screwing up and growing up”. During this time something happens later known as “The Rachel Incident” which involves her professor Dr Byrne and becomes infamous around Cork which makes Rachel flee to the UK

It’s revealed in the first chapter The Rachel Incident is set as a mysterious event which involves Dr Byrne, and then we backtrack to finding out what the incident actually was. I really enjoyed this, you think you knew where the story was going early on and then it made a quick twist. This is great for a book about being messy in your twenties, intense best friend relationships. I think this is a book to go into knowing not too much about, so I won’t say too much more but I really loved this and how it was written.

I am not an annotator or tabber on physical books, but early on this book made me want to be, with its very witty quick whips and relatable commentary.

It was so close to being a 5 star, but I’m becoming stingier with my 5 star ratings - and feel like 5 star has to be books I’ll still be thinking about a month down the line. It could well be this does get bumped up as I was so sure the whole way through this would get to a being a full marks book.
