This book just throws you in and expects you to figure it out yourself. It can get very confusing as nothing is ever explained. It starts off pretty promising with a great cast of characters and a fast paced plot but it quickly gets repetitive and meandering. A good third of the book could have been cut and it wouldn’t have affected anything. It’s labeled as the first book in a series but I won’t be picking up the sequel.

A police state scrambling to establish/maintain order in a collapsing world by building mechs using the ghosts of corrupted, divine AIs and using their surviving followers as pilots is too cool a concept for me not to love this book, but it's one that needs some patience and attention because it is not by any means a breezy book. It's walking too many tightropes and it doesn't succeed at all of them, but again, cool robots (and body horror, and merged consciousnesses, and betrayals, and...)
