Took me a long time to get into this book but by the end I really liked it, and the ending was very dramatic. Would have liked to see more discussion of the moral implications of the leading family's holding of enslaved people on Antigua (which I'd understood was a key reason why the book went down badly on first publication) but this theme was only briefly discussed.

I think I like Fanny Price. While all the other characters are written colorfully, Ms. Price seems to be painted in grayscale. I hated how perpetually silent she remained even when she most definitely had an opinion. She is also portrayed as the “ideal” woman who is always faint and weak and needs the assistance of a man to move around, a description which I think drove Jane Austen as crazy as it does me. What I loved about Fanny was how strongly she stood by her principles. She is the only character who is not swayed by temptation. She disapproved of Mr. Crawford’s character and rejected his proposal on that grounds despite his charming persistence and continuous attention.

Good bed time reading as I quickly tired of it each night.

A timid, virtuous heroine who gets a happy ending despite not acting on her own interests; most modern readers won't get anything out of it.
