My least favorite Austen book. Fanny is such a boring, spineless, moralizing character, totally unlike the spirited heroines of her other books. Now Mary Crawford, that is the perspective this book should have been written from.

I thought I'd better review a book that I didn't give a great rating to otherwise nobody would take me seriously. Mansfield Park is my least favourite Austen book. I had a hard time getting into it and didn't care too much about the characters. I didn't get that Austen-high when I finished reading it, like I get with the others.

I don’t know why this book gets so much hate. I loved watching Fanny stand up for herself against all of people who wanted her to compromise her values (even if some of those values seem a bit stuffy by modern standards).

Oof. This was a SLOG. I listened to it on audible and I wish I hadn't. I generally enjoy Jane Austen novels for their wit and easy romantic plots. But this was not a book to listen to. Austen has a tendency to state someone's name once and then proceed to only use their pronouns. So if you miss the name, you will have no idea who "he" is or "she" is. In a contemporary listen, this isn't a problem. But Austen will spend pages and pages talking about a character and only mention their name once. So you are out of luck if you forget or don't manage to catch the name.

I also couldn't for the life of me remember who was a Bertram and who was a Crawford. The names confused me for the majority of the book. I kept getting them mixed up. I wish they had been more distinguishable.

Also, I had less patience for the characters in this one than I do for her other novels. Maybe because it's longer. I just wanted to scream at Edmund and Fanny: YOU LIKE EACH OTHER! JUST GET MARRIED AND GET IT OVER WITH!

And believe me, I'm not spoiling anything. We know IN THE BEGINNING Fanny's feelings for Edmund and we can tell that Edmund likes her just as much based on his treatment of her. But we spend hundred and hundreds of pages of them NOT COMMUNICATING before we get the ending we know is coming (it's Jane Austen after all). God, I hated it all. And then when it does end, aside from being relieved it's over, we get no satisfaction. It's just like "and they were married. The end."

I think I could probably tolerate this a little better if I had read it. But I don't see myself ever reading this again. I just don't care enough. Also, Edmund and Fanny are cousins. So....gross.
