Not my favorite Jane Austen novel, but still an endearing and interesting story. I love the ending!! I wish it were a little shorter, some sections didn’t add to the story and dragged on.
dark emotional sad slow-paced

Mansfield Park was somehow a quick read and a slow read at the same time. It’s vivid, bright, and bleak all in one book.

Throughout, we see themes of family fortunes, dependence and independence within families, moral trajectories, and obedience vs disobedience. It really is quite captivating and incredibly frustrating.

While the book itself is quite accessible, I do think there is some aspects of knowledge that would make it a richer reading and impact. For instance, the etiquette of letters (calling each other miss, Mr, etc never by the first name as that was relegated to close friends), the societal impact for an entire family of ending an engagement or a marriage (different rules back then). None of this should deter any reader though. Anyone can easily understand what is happening within the book!

Jane’s humor is quite funny, and I was definitely laughing at some parts. None tickled me more than the end when she said, “I quit such odious subjects as soon as I can”. Girlie, you wrote them.

Speaking of the end, I can’t say it was satisfactory for all. Some, for sure. Mrs. Norris I’m looking at you. Mostly, I had wanted more from the ending.

A great book and highly recommend everyone read.
