The writing is lovely. Some of the parts that resonated with me were the descriptions of Josef and his father's practice of medicine. Richman's writing assigns great respect and compassion to the care they give to patients. Being married to a physician myself, I felt the truth in her description of Josef's long days at the hospital. I will never forget the story of Josef's father and the wounded bird.
I thoroughly enjoyed the structure of the novel as she artfully wove the stories of Josef and Lenka together in a heartbreaking tale of love and loss.
Most compelling were the descriptions of survival in the ghetto and later concentration camps. I am newly awed by the human compassion the Jewish people were able to maintain in circumstances that defy description.
This book is worth the read. I am grateful to my friend who recommended it!

Found it incredibly moving.

What a rollercoaster of emotions... Very touching story inspired by real people and events... I cried several times reading this novel.

A very good read. The story is so amazingly emotional and beautiful while just being incredibly heart-wrenching. The plot vacillates between the perspectives of Josef and Lenka, giving pieces of their lives over the past 60 years, flanked at beginning and end with a current point in time. More of the book is dedicated to Lenka's story, as would somewhat be expected, but it leaves Josef's story feeling somewhat watery and lacking. Though it was still very good, I could have done with more from his perspective. I also struggled with not being extraordinarily angry about the ending, but ultimately the lack of a satisfying ending (a lack of closure more than a lack of good storytelling) is what caused me to demote this to 4 stars.

Adorei!!!
Apesar das descrições das vidas das personagens na 2º Guerra Mundial, o final consegue aquecer-nos o coração.

BEAUTIFUL! This book is deeply moving and thought provoking.
It will pull you in from the very first page.

Esta bien.. es una historia linda.

"I have come to believe that love is not a noun but a verb. An action. Like water, it flows to its own current. Even in separation, even in death, it moves and changes."

Caught in a politically created campaign of hate that incrementally and horrifically evolves, the characters make decisions which irrevocably alter the courses of their lives. This is a beautiful story (and well crafted) about love--romantic and passionate, yes; but also the resonating love, with all its nuances, of family, friends, and those bonded by purpose. Documentation through art is a fascinating and compelling aspect of the story, as are the author's notes regarding what is true vs fiction. I love when a story is so captivating that you have to go online to research this or that person or detail, and such was the case through this...through tears.
