The Moving Finger

Agatha Christie

Nothing much ever happens in the small town of Lymstock. That is until anonymous, wicked letters start appearing all over town, and the lawyer’s wife commits suicide over the contents of hers.

Luckily, this is a short book. The writing was a bit hard to get into, and Agatha was up to her passive aggressive racism a few times.

Miss Marple doesn’t come in until the very end. Almost as an afterthought. Not a favorite.

To not risk spoilers, a really great Agatha Christie.

Honestly, I'm at the point where I don't think it's possible for Christie to write a bad crime story. Some definitely grab me more or are more intricate and unique but they are all pretty solid. The characters in this one were also cute and quirky. I was having a grand old time reading about Jerry playing at being a detective with local authorities. However, all that stopped rather abruptly when Miss Marple swooped into the story. Two conversations and a couple sightings later, here she is solving it... Needless to say, I felt Jerry got robbed.

I wondered the whole time when Miss Marple will make her entrance. Sadly it takes her until the last couple of pages, otherwise interesting as always but not my favorite.

Pleasant enough little mystery. Mildly surprised by some of the humour. Will admit it didn't totally engage me, but I won't be too harsh in that regard because it's been a tough time to set aside time for reading... Still, probably other books would have had me more eager to pick it up.
