I like the way Percival writes. This story is so sad, but also has a realistic yet hopeful ending.
challenging dark emotional sad tense medium-paced

I love a book that demands (or at least rewards) careful reading. This one does that, though I certainly didn't catch all references and nuances. In fact, without a book group I would have missed at least one significant event. My impression is that every word choice is intentional in how it influences the description and moves the story forward. There's so much going on here, a second reading would likely be worthwhile.

The sections describing trying to be a father as your child is dying are devastating without being sappy.

Will read more of Everett now.

Fast becoming a favourite author of mine!
A great mix of pathos and humour in this one.

My least favourite of the Percival Everetts I've read - it felt quite forced literarily and emotionally, a bit sadness porn, threads not leading anywhere...

This wasn’t really for me.

And why was it called “Telephone”?
