This one was much harder to read because of the absolute desolation that Phedra experiences. It was hard to want to keep reading when it just kept getting worse and worse for her. I'm glad I kept reading! But ouch. I do think that this one got a little too complicated for me: I kept forgetting who characters were and how they were related. But I think that's a Me Problem. Still very good. Even if Carey places the French as a god's chosen people.

The mystery and intrigue is captivating in these books, but the pacing just kills me. It felt even slower in this second book -- the writing style itself doesn't bother me (I've seen some people say it is 'overwritten', which is a fair critique but not something I personally feel), but there's so much traveling from here to there to there to over here and back again and that kind of thing bogs me down quite a bit while reading.

This one just had quite a few chapters/side quests that felt a bit filler-y. But I still love these characters and am very intrigued with the politics and scheming going on all the time!

Could use more bears.

The whole "dark ~ evil / fair ~ good" is more pronounced in this volume and the descriptions, or lack thereof of dark skinned people is pretty gross tbh.

I remember finding this one more boring the first time around some time in the 10s via paper, but I enjoyed it more as an audiobook I think.
