Is there no other way to prove a character is evil than to have them sexually assault people?

Here's the story summary: a lot of horrible yet somehow uninteresting people waste immortality by pining over other uninteresting people.

not sure if I'll read book 2....hmmmm

Update: Apparently, I forgot I read this previously and re-read it. I have to admit I did not remember one word, not one word. And my take over a decade later is less generous than my original review. I found the characters annoying, the storyline felt scattered and many plot holes.

Well, this was certainly different from what I expected. The story starts in present day Maine, where we meet Lanny who's been brought into the ER after murdering her companion. Luke, the physician on duty, is immediately attracted to her and thus begins the tale of Lanny and her immortal life. The story, which goes back and forth between different centuries, is filled with unrequited love, sex, violence, rape and obsession. Not exactly topics that will appeal to everyone. Having said that, the author is a very talented storyteller and I did get caught up reading this first story in a trilogy.

Damn. It's that good. The transition between time periods is almost seamless, and the depth of the character development is some of the best I've come across in years. Can you say page turner?

This book was very good. Too intriguing to put down!

I really enjoyed this book, and I will definitely be reading the next installments in the trilogy. It was very nice to read a story that I haven't read before, unlike a lot of books coming out lately which are all the same story with different characters!

I really liked Lanny, I think even though she has her faults, she is still a good person who is just trying to survive the horrible ordeal that she has had to go through.

I can't wait to read more.

I recieved this book through the GoodReads First Reads Giveaway. This has not affected my review in any way.

I absolutely loved the cover, and the plot was filled with twists and turns. There was also some occasionally gorgeous writing.

BUT... I did not really care what happened to either Luke, nor Lanore, and the device of Lanore telling a story and then switching to yet another voice, another time period, did not work well for me. This book did interest me enough to finish it, but not enough for me to want to read the rest of the trilogy.

Also, the Lanore & Jonathan "love story" is really a story of a handsome guy who's a narcissistic jerk, and the girl who's unhealthily obsessed by him, which is neither enhanced nor improved by being spread out over a couple of centuries.

The writing was great but the subject matter was too dark for me. I started reading this around Christmas so it wasn't exactly holiday reading material. I might give another try down the road.

I won this book through GoodReads First Reads.

This is definitely an adult book. It has sex, rape, murder, abortion, miscarriage, prostitution, torture, kidnapping, and plenty of other difficult adult situations.

I'm pretty squeamish, and I don't usually like books with too many difficult situations. But this story was really interesting. I plan on reading the next in the series.
