It was an OK book but didn't speak to me that much. There are better books about witches, I think.

This is a book from a series called Darkland Tales, where modern day authors reimagine real events in Scottish History.
Hex is the story of Geillis Duncan, a teenage girl, who was accused of being a witch, by her employer, David Seaton. Her trial and death were but one in a number of executions during the North Berwick Witch Trials.
It is the 4th. December 1591 and Geillis is sitting in her cell, knowing that she will hang in the morning.
As she is thinking about the torture and inhumane acts, visited on her by her employer and his friends, Iris appears at her side. She tells Geillis that she is from the future where women still get a raw deal if they are different or don't conform to society's (men's) norms.
She brings solace to Geillis as she listens to her story and gives her hope for final moments.
Definitely had me in turns, incredibly sad and incredibly angry especially knowing what this 15 year old lassie endured, on the say so of a group of pompous men backed up by a King who's ambition was to wipe out all the "witches" in the land. What makes it even worse are the women who were only too happy to point the finger of blame.

I’m absolutely torn trying to rate this. It was certainly an interesting read, and one that I enjoyed. And though the story was sad, it didn’t make me feel much of anything.
At parts the talk of feminism feels too modern for the 16th century, and it was hard for me to believe Geillis really lived then.
I found the relationship between Geillis and Iris sweet though and the concept is a nice one.
This was not a book I disliked in any way, but not one I am overly amazed by either.

I would consider it feminist literature. There are a few really good excerpts written that I will think about for a while and are reflective of our current society. I will be getting a copy myself just to have and annotate. I was bothered by the no quotations moment which made it confusing if certain parts were spoken aloud or thoughts, but overall a short read and good for those looking for a small feminist moment.
