loved the characters and very convoluted plot, but not sure how believable it was

Couldn't do it. Faux drama.

I always admire how Sophie Hannah can take a seemingly unresolvable plot and, well, resolve it, although the fact that I can seldom remember what happened a few weeks later always gives me pause. This might be the one that loses me. I actually really enjoyed the interleaved story of the other family, but the plot was too convoluted to have that same effortless brilliance this time, and there were too many loose ends.

I would've given this book one star, but I was intrigued to finish it. It started well, but eventually I realized the overly-obvious plot wasn't going to take a more interesting turn and got frustrated. I kept waiting for that ah-ha moment where the plot twist would come and all the stupidity of the characters would make sense. However, it never came. I love other Sophie Hannah books, but this one was a bust.

Definitely not at all what I expected going in, but still a fun thriller if you’re looking for something lighter. I enjoyed the story in a story format, but overall it needed a lot of suspended disbelief.

I can't agree with the worst of the reviews - I certainly didn't think it was one of Sophie Hannah's best, but I read it to the end without too much effort. I would agree that the 'story within a story' was wearing. I couldn't quite bring myself to like any of the characters either. Strange review for a strange book.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

I went into this book with really high expectations (when will I ever learn not to do this with thrillers) and was incredibly disappointed in the end. The first 100 or so pages was really intriguing and the synopsis was what initially drew me in. By the end though it was just dragging and I struggled to finish the book. I had to hold myself back from jumping ahead and skipping stuff in case I accidentally missed something good.

The "twist" being that the lady was just incredibly delusional and they killed her was almost painful to read. And the fact that the twist was revealed with like 100 pages left (as if there should be a second and better twist) made it impossible to want to continue reading. In my opinion when Olwen was pretending to be Allisande she should've revealed herself to actually be Sandie instead of really just playing along (there were multiple opportunities to do this plot line). Now that plot twist would've been shocking to me. I'm reading another one of Hannah's books soon and I'll have to see if it's any better than this one.

I swear I really need to stop reading thrillers in hopes to be thrilled.

A creepy, suspenseful story, with a creepy story-in-a-story. I couldn't put it down!

I've never read any Sophie Hannah before and I must admit, I won't be reading anymore.

This book was plot heavy, which is the only reason I made it past page 50. The writing was just awful with no attempt made to hide the fact that every event was more incredulous than the next and last. It was like reading a story written by a teenager under the premise "Write a novel where a stalker destroys the life of a family".

It took almost all my strength to finish this book.
