A little slow at first but holy crap - I’ve never been as enraptured by an intrigue-centered plot as with this book.

More than five years ago I read a review of A Civil Campaign which made me very interested in reading it. A delightful space romance, yes please! However I am one of those readers who likes to read things in order, so instead of seeking out this book I instead read Shards of Honor, and then continued through the series chronologically, though rather slowly. It may have taken me five years to get here, but I'm so glad I did. I loved this book very much, and definitely see myself rereading it into the future, the way I do old favorites like Pride and Prejudice. And I don't regret the long path that I took to get here, as I have gotten very invested in this world and its characters by watching them develop slowly over time.

to have written a dinner party as excruciating as that is a literary achievement unto itself

This is the Vorkosigan book I reread the least often, probably because I have a fierce embarrassment squick. It's very good though, and thoughtful. Appropriate reading, since I've been to three weddings so far this year, including two just this month!

This is one of my favourite Vorkosigan books, and reading it this time I'm reminded again how damn CLEVER Bujold is. Not only to basically give us a comedy of manners in space opera clothing, but the head hopping sets us up BEAUTIFULLY for later books beyond Miles's purview. Love it.
