As a big fan of Neil Gaiman and all kinds of mythology this book was really meant for me. While reading I felt it spoke to me directly and made me laugh and hug the kindle while reading the eArc. At times I felt I wasn't smart enough to get all the the different little clues, at others I just felt like riding along but when I did pick a hint of who a character was or I could relate it to someone else I felt so full filled.
I loved Nat's story, her growing up in a small little yellow house in NY, her conversations with the cats and how she slowly discovers who she really is or what she has to do. This is also a journey of discovery of both a world of gods and of self discovery as one of them. Or not quite yet one of them if you want me to be closer to the truth.
But anyway I feel you will like it if you love urban fantasy with a softer than normal main character, all things mythology but with some twists and a dash of pop culture in the mix. At the beginning I compared it to October Daye by Seanan McGuire (my favorite series, can't change that) but then I felt more and more the American Gods comparison. Anyway, the story stands on its own and it's a great and fun read.
Thank you Tor and Netgalley for the eArc. I can't wait to read the second one (as this one is left in a huge cliff hanger).

Spring's Arcana by Lilith Saintcrow has an interesting story line, which I was drawn to. A young woman, Nat Drozdova trying to save her mother's life, finds herself a part of a mysterious and dangerous scavenger hunt to find an artifact desperately desired by a dangerous woman who has the power to cure her mother. In the process, Nat learns that there is so much more beneath the surface and many would go at great lengths to obtain what Nat is seeking.

I LOVE all of that. What I found difficult was that the mother was not very likeable, and the story line was hard to follow. There were parts of the book that I really enjoyed, and it pulled me in during those times, but then got confused on some of the details which had me frustrated.

I do feel that with a little more editing and stronger world building, the reader would be less confused, and the book more enjoyable. It has good bones, and I would love to see it developed a little further.

Thank you to NetGalley, TorTrade, and Lillith Saintcrow for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I wasn’t really that into this. It was an alright plot line but I felt like I’ve read that plot line so many times before. It especially reminded me a lot of American Gods- which I also didn’t really enjoy. I don’t know, I think I just couldn’t connect with the characters and since I’m a very character-centric reader, that really took away from my enjoyment.

I'm so disappointed, the metaphors and excessive adjectives SATURATE every paragraph and it is actually too distracting to read.

There's some really good descriptive writing in this novel, but the rest is such an incredible rip-off of Neil Gaiman that I'm surprised the publisher is allowing this to go out into the world. Better have a good defense lawyer handy. In addition, the plots make no sense, people do things that make no sense, and the whole thing is a mess.

Seems like her rift off of American Gods TV series. And Baba Yaga is having a moment.
