Wow Sci-fi. Quiet, unexpected adventure. A very rewarding read.

Unfortunately, the more I think about Far North, the more underwhelmed I feel. My primary thought of this book is, "it was fine." I took this book with me to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where it was the perfect read after a long day of hiking, because of its mediocre nature. I didn't want to be engaging with a complex, lyrical text; I just wanted something to read until we fell asleep for the night.

This is a common criticism, but that's because it's a very good one: This book felt like a less impactful, more meandering version of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I read The Road last fall, and the similarities were uncountable.

Additionally, I was not a fan of the way Makepeace was written. I am fine with men writing women, of course, but in this case it was so obvious that a man had written the female protagonist. She said and did things that were weirdly characterized as "woman things" (like being sad???), which was very off putting.

The plot was extremely slow at some points and felt as if it was paced oddly. The story felt as if it should have ended 30 pages earlier, and I certainly didn't think the epilogue did the story any favors. Despite the fact that this book was fine when I was actively reading it,  I will likely forget it very soon.
