Read this for a book club bc someone said they think about it all the time and changed them as a person.
I don’t really see why.
It’s short n gets its point across. AKA apathy = bad. But it’s not inspiring or endearing to me. If anything this is the kind of presentation that puts people off these types of political ideas. Kinda feels like I’m being told off rather than informed or inspired.
If this was a person it would be the kind of person you tolerate for the greater good of your community but make a personal note to keep them in check when necessary.
Also ain’t mao frucking crazy? Why this dude’s writing inspire you? Idk history tho so ???

"Combat Liberalism" by Mao Zedong is a piece of propaganda that, despite its title, does little to contribute positively to political discourse. One of the major flaws in Mao's argument is his tendency to label any dissenting opinion as "liberalism" without considering the value of diverse perspectives. This authoritarian approach stifles intellectual freedom and discourages open dialogue, a fundamental aspect of a healthy society.
Mao's call for the suppression of liberal tendencies is, in reality, an endorsement of authoritarianism. The document advocates for a culture of blind obedience to the ruling party, discouraging critical thinking and independent analysis. This suppressive approach undermines the very principles of democracy and freedom of thought that are essential for a thriving society.
Furthermore, Mao's characterization of liberalism as a "disease" oversimplifies complex political ideologies, reducing them to mere obstacles to be eradicated. Such black-and-white thinking neglects the nuances of political thought and fails to recognize the potential for constructive debate and compromise.
The document's call for a ruthless approach to combating liberalism contributes to a climate of fear and self-censorship. By discouraging dissent, Mao perpetuates a culture where individuals are afraid to voice their opinions, hindering the growth of a vibrant and dynamic intellectual landscape.
Moreover, Mao's prescription for combating liberalism often relies on arbitrary criteria, allowing those in power to conveniently label any opposition as liberal and deserving of suppression. This lack of clear definitions and objective standards opens the door to abuse of power and manipulation.
In conclusion, "Combat Liberalism" by Mao Zedong is a deeply flawed and authoritarian piece that fails to appreciate the importance of diverse perspectives and open dialogue in a healthy society. Its call for suppression and the stifling of dissenting opinions undermines the very values it claims to defend, ultimately contributing to a regressive and oppressive political environment.

Fascinating little read. Talks about the well intentions of liberal ideology, but the lack of commitment to action in the face of loss or discomfort. Definitely memorable.
"People who are liberals look upon the principles of Marxism as abstract dogma. They approve of Marxism, but are not prepared to practice it or to practice it in full; they are not prepared to replace their liberalism by Marxism. These people have their Marxism, but they have their liberalism as well--they talk Marxism but practice liberalism; they apply Marxism to others but liberalism to themselves. They keep both kinds of goods in stock and find a use for each. This is how the minds of certain people work."
