Reminds me of A Gentleman in Moscow and in like that book it has constant plot and well thought out character development. Brennert tells a wonderful/epic/sad story about what being a cast out of the 1890s to 1950s society, as a leper. As the world moves on and around the settlement on Moloka'i, we see the world in the eyes of Rachel.

A beautiful and deeply sad story. I never knew that much about Hawaii's history especially this time period. Reading this is like reading a historical account of what it's like to be a leper during this time. I thought the story was very rich and vibrant when it came to life on the peninsula but felt a little blurry everywhere else.
