Read it once...then read it again, slowly. Chocked full of real life and real suggestions for balancing our lives in love and service...and being joyful about it.
This book was very enjoyable to listen to, it almost read like it was meant to be read out loud. It wasn't particularly hard hitting theology but rather encouraging.
We usually feel overwhelmed because we are not spending enough time with God. Favorite chapter was on living room intimacy
This book is so helpful in finding the balance between service and worship, between personal intimacy with God and working with excellence. As with any other book outside of scripture, it must be read with discernment and thoughtfulness, but overall it is very well-written, very convicting, and very encouraging. I would especially recommend this book to anyone who feels like they tend to get caught up so much in “doing” and serving that they neglect their time with God — this is really where I was at when I was reading this book and it has been such a gift to read this and see myself starting to find that balance.
Overall, I had a very positive experience with this book. I don't know if it was the book itself, or the fellowship it brought me by reading it with a friend and going through the bible study together every week. Sometimes I giggled at her writing and her vivid interpretation of the scripture. I would still recommend this book to friends, and found it to be a growing experience in my faith!
I really enjoyed this book, and gleaned several terrific truths from it! I’m thankful for the blending of ideals it displays, regarding working and being still before the Lord. I will not forget these truths!

I wanted to love this book, but it was only an average read for me. I think if I had read this 15 years ago it would have been more applicable to my life and therefore I would have loved it more.
The basic premise of choosing the right thing (intimacy with God) over the busy-ness of life is on point. The writing style of the author uses a blend of scripture and either personal examples or examples from others to make her points real. Even though I felt that this was not the perfect book for me at this time in my life, I did find several thoughts or practices to be challenging and will implement things into my daily life.
I would encourage others to read this book, especially younger women, or those with family, work, and church duties all clamoring for time and attention.

An invitation for every woman who feels she isn't godly enough...isn't loving enough...isn't doing enough
The life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord's feet...but the daily demands of a busy world just won't leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him...yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.
Then comes Jesus, right into the midst of your busy Mary/Martha life-and he extends the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters of Bethany. Tenderly he invites you to choose "the better part"-a joyful life of "living-room" intimacy with him that flows naturally into "kitchen service" for him.
How can you make that choice? With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story and its creative, practical strategies, Joanna shows how all of us-Marys and Marthas alike-can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.
My Review - I loved this book even if it did take me FOREVER to read it. It made me feel like there was more to my relationship with God then just Him being God. He's my Dad! He wants only the best for me and part of that best for me is an intimate relationship with him. I still feel like I should do more for Him but sometimes it isn't about that. It's about sitting down and just spending time with him. An amazing book by an amazing woman. I can't wait to read the second book, Having a Mary Spirit.
