Not as bad as i expected it to be, i dont like books where i cant like a main character (cough secret history cough) so the -3 stars is just out of a preference against the book - but it was well written and easy to read and definitely achieved the goal of making the main character easily hate-able

1. the fact that other people seem to be shocked at the subject material of this book is frankly just hilarious to me, like, seriously?
2. my actual true gripe with this book is that it was Terribly written, chock full of disjointed paragraphs that were hard to follow, stylized as a rambling train of thought that reveals itself to be a weak attempt at stream of consciousness with no apparent benefit to the narrative
3. also just was. boring? disappointing

This book is not “deeply disturbing” or whatever it is you were sold on booktok.
This is a good book, but it IS the disjointed ramblings of a paranoid narcissist and recovering alcoholic. It is uncomfortable.
He goes into sudden, random, tangents and skips around about information that happened or will happen and repeats himself often or goes in circles.
He’s completely unreliable and seeks to be spotlit. He wants to be a winner, to be the best in the room, to have the last laugh. It’s unattractive, and it’s humorous enough to feel like you’re reading the thoughts of a supervillain.
He doesn’t understand love or how to love.
This is INTENTIONAL. It’s not “bad writing” it’s the writing of a sick fucking man.
I read this and so help me but I understood him - why he acted how he did. He lays out his problems in plain English. When you are this ill and unhealed you give in to your base instincts.
You don’t want to get hurt so you hurt others instead. You hate yourself so you inflict the pain you feel you deserve onto others to feel satisfaction. To bring them to your level.
And then he meets someone who is just as fucked up. Who is a bully. Who makes him an experiment and a joke. Even this book is just a final fuck you.
But! He sticks to his sobriety. He is able to have a relationship in the end. Talks about therapy. He’s slowly moving along even if he’s not over it all.
Does it absolve him of the emotional hurt he inflicted in the past? No! Is he irredeemable? Also no!
Yes he sounds evil, misogynistic, all of the above. BUT it doesn’t make it a bad book or not worth reading. It’s important to know about all walks of life. Even these. If you’re interested.
Virtue signaling needs to be put aside and critical thinking + empathy caps put on if anyone is going to read something like this.
If readers don’t want to read about fucked up people or actions then… stop reading books other people call disturbing if you refuse to try to analyze them or look at them from an unbiased perspective.
“iT’s jUsT mY oPiNiOn.” Ehhhhhhhhh - I plead the 5th.
This is the same as defending addicts or mentally ill people with “they have a disease! :( “ but then getting mad when they learn about how sick people actually act and how they can hurt others. It doesn’t excuse their actions, but bottom line is they can do awful things, don’t be surprised.

the narrator is absolutely evil. If this is a perspective into the male mind I can never look at a man the same.

I don’t hate this because of the dislikable narrator, I hate it because I couldn’t bring myself to care.

This book is fundementally pointless. An apparent fiction yet seems to read, especially with the anonymous publishing, like one man's gripe against the world.
Sounds like an interesting premise, but in fact there is no reason to root for this man, or indeed, any of the characters he introduces to the story, all of which are equally unlikable.
I haven't any idea what the moral of this story, or the point was, and with prose that is both boring and at times offensive I have limited interest in finding out. I wouldn't recommend this book, and am wary of people who would.

like eating raw meat: really appalling but also awakening
this guy feeds you salmonella that will disgust you but also exposes you to his attempt at unfiltered avant-garde narrative (some people are actually like him) that could also be understood as ironically invigorating.
the fourth wall breaking was also refreshing albeit awkward
general enjoyment could go both ways for this book so i'll sit on the fence
