Certainly not a great book. As short as it was, we didn't need the second chapter at all. But....the last chapter did intrigue me to maybe read the second book. The main character is definitely loathsome and in complete denial of how much he deserves to be wrecked by a relationship in the same fashion that he wrecked so many before. He hides behind his sobriety as if it gives him a clean slate to be upset about his own misfortune without recognizing the hurt he put on others- on purpose, with pleasure. These people do, in fact, exist in our day to day work so I think I want to see how this shit show plays out. I would not recommend- I am cleary going to regret wasting my time on reading the second book.

The book is so layered: you begin with a deep resentment towards the character who has spent his entire existence hurting women. And particularly preying on vulnerable women, meticulously planning the ways in which to inflict pain (even up to four years). Albeit, we learn about his childhood trauma and reasoning very briefly, the story takes a dark turn and it’s interesting that we begin to feel a slight lingering of sympathy towards him. It’s a very raw account of his feelings, with some comic elements. He lives in a bubble in which he does everything for himself, but towards the end there are glimpses of reflection. Overall I enjoyed it + read in one sitting!

unpopular opinion but i actually liked this book a lot. you get to see inside the mind of a very unlikeable main character. why that would be appealing or enjoyable in anyway doesn’t make sense, and yet it works so well in this book.
