too me the first hundred pages to get into, but the. once again i couldn’t put it down. chanel cleeton knows how to write historical fiction chick lit.

I really enjoyed this book, the story of these three different women all facing a personal struggle with the back drop of the Great Depression and one of the worst Hurricanes in US history. Chanel Cleeton does such a wonderful job of creating strong female characters who face adversity and preserve. The history of the hurricane and the disastrous attempt to rescue the soldiers is not well known but it is story that is important. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Recommend this engaging historical fiction.

A terrific distraction from the nightmare that is national politics right now.

Three women, each experiencing her own dire circumstances, intersect in the Florida keys during the hurricane of 1935. With brooding, handsome men who turn out to be good guys.

This book is a cariacature of a chick novel. The relationships between the 3 female protagonists is contrived. The only interesting part is the description of events around the hurricane. Sorry - I was just glad to finish it.

I have seen many of Chanel Cleeton's books around the web and in bookstores and hadn't picked one up. I have been less likely to pick up historical fiction the last few years as it just hasn't been hitting my fancy. However, I picked this one up on a whim at the library and whew, it blew me away! I started it late in the evening and could barely put it down to go to bed. I loved the ways in which each woman very much had their own stories but at times intertwined in creative (and organic) ways. I did see a few of the connections coming, but it still made for a great story. The very last twist at the end I definitely did not see coming and it made the ending even better. Chanel Cleeton's backlist here I come!

3.5 stars — I really, really loved Chanel Cleeton’s first two books, and enjoyed this storyline, too, as they’re the definition of “escapism” for me—cheesy parts and all. This has three beautiful stories intertwined in an interesting way, but this book also had more than usual of the parts of Chanel’s writing I don’t love. Many of the “biggest scenes” and most emotional moments occurred in only 1-2 flowery lines and left me exceptionally disappointed and wanting more. Many of the transitions in these women’s thoughts and feelings and decisions were too unbelievable and happened too quickly, and there was a lot of unnecessary repetition in the descriptive language. Overall, I think this is a great setting for a book and the stories are intriguing, but the “cheesiness” (for lack of a better word) and flowery language went a bit too far in this one.

More like 3.5

With the Labor Day Hurricane of the 1930's as a backdrop, Cleeton brings us a story of 3 women who are at critical junctures of their lives and details how they come through the events - both hurricane and their circumstances stronger.
I preferred her other books and found this one entertaining but not as powerful.

A few of the "hidden" connections between the 3 narrators were a little too obvious early on for my liking, but all of the women had strong voices and the setting was vividly described. Recommend for a summer read.

Chanel Cleeton has this way of writing characters I grow to care about, and I especially love how she writes strong women.

The three women meet unexpectedly on a holiday weekend, and not only are they each in precarious positions, there’s also a storm bearing down on the Florida Keys.

As someone who has experienced several hurricanes and tropical storms, I found Cleeton was on point with what it feels like through every sense to be on the ground during these storms, and the historical time period fascinated me. With this backdrop of danger, there is love and romance, too. If you enjoy historicals a smidge more on the romance spectrum, you have got to check out this book and author.

About the book: In 1935 three women are forever changed when one of the most powerful hurricanes in history barrels toward the Florida Keys in New York Times bestselling author Chanel Cleeton's captivating new novel.

I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
