This is the third book by Chanel Cleeton that I have read. I really am liking how solid she writes historical fiction. In this book, she writes about the Labor Day hurricane of 1935. Powerful & destructive! More about the veterans labor camps & U.S. gangsters connectioned to Cuban government would have been great. I also enjoy that she connects the characters' families between the three books.

Having said all that, I was less impressed with the story lines of the 3 couples. If it weren't for the history, this would be fairly average chicklit.

It was fine. I saw the “surprises” at the end coming. I just didn’t like this one as much as the previous two books in the series

I wouldn't have picked up this novel based on the description, but I'm a big fan of Chanel Cleeton ([b:Next Year in Havana|34374628|Next Year in Havana|Chanel Cleeton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1498524468l/34374628._SY75_.jpg|55459615] is one of my all-time favorites). That being said, while the plot didn't exactly hook me, Cleeton is such a good storyteller that I found myself enjoying it nonetheless.

The characters were all likable and, though not entirely developed, they each had their own distinct voice and reasons to root for them. The story follows three different women as they intersect in Key West amidst a brewing storm in 1935 (based on a true event). Helen feels like a prisoner trapped in paradise with her abusive husband; Mirta, moving to America from Cuba, is on her honeymoon with a man she barely knows in a marriage to save her family; and Elizabeth is in search of help to escape the troubles her family faces back in New York.

I liked two of the stories far more than the third, but I appreciated the way the author found surprising ways to weave them together. While this wasn't my favorite book, it definitely solidifies Cleeton as one of my favorite authors, and I'm already looking forward to her next project.
