Very enjoyable on audio! Three intertwining stories, three very different women, one big storm. This is the third book I’ve read by Chanel Cleeton, and I always look forward to her kind characterizations, and dashes of local color. The veteran’s camps were a piece of history I knew nothing about, and I appreciate her writing about their plight (tragic). Super fast read, nail biting in parts, with a nice wrap up at the end.
What a truly enjoyable book this is. I read Next year in Havana last year and loved it. This story takes place in 1935 in Key West, Florida leading up to one of the most devastating hurricanes in history. The story is told through the eyes of three different women whose lives collide unexpectedly. This all takes place in a time in history that I was so unfamiliar with and learning about it was an added bonus. It’s a love story packed with danger, suspense and surprises.
I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderfully descriptive story full of passion, family secrets, courage and sacrifice. Chanel Cleeton does an excellent job of making you feel as though you are right in the thick of the story with excellent character development and beautiful storytelling. But what is sticking with me the most from this beautifully written book is one line on page 76. “The day we stop fighting for others is the day we might as well pack it all up and go home.” I feel as thought “fighting for” can also be “protecting”. This line hit me hard in our current climate here in this country.
Three women of very different backgrounds have their lives thrown together when a hurricane hits Key West in the 1930s. I liked each of the character's stories and also enjoyed reading about the experience of being in a hurricane.

Amidst all the suffering, the major problems are solved by violence, which is a little problematic. But I enjoyed the stories and the interweaving of these characters lives. I found Sam and John a little too interchangeable at times.
