Although I found the non-linear timeline a bit chaotic, I do realize that memory is like this. Powerful story and historic look at the Black experience in 1970s Brooklyn. A longing for family, for love, for life.

Beautiful, poetic, and full of vivid and intensely evocative imagery. I'm sure that in the hands of a lesser writer, I would find the scattered style deeply annoying -- chapters full of often loosely connected paragraphs, almost little prose poems -- but Woodson has the skill to pull it off. Still, I'm enough of a traditionalist to long for a little more cohesion.

Don't be deceived by the slight appearance of this novel. It is powerful and poetic, raw and real.

A beautifully written coming of age story. Very lyrical and poetic.

Hard to review this as it took me a long time to finish it, although no fault of its own. However, I think it's beautifully written with a compelling narrative. It's a touching story and you feel for these young girls and the world they're growing up in. Wish I could elaborate but these were my lasting impressions.
