A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens

3.99 AVERAGE

There's a reason that this story has endured so long and been adapted so many times-it's amazing. The story is entertaining, the language is beautiful, and it put me in the Christmas spirit faster than anything else I've done so far. Also, the audiobook is read by Jim Dale, and it's perfect. I am one of the few people who is not extremely fond of his Harry Potter audios, but there's no denying his talent, especially when it's paired with a story like this.

2024 edition-doing my annual listen to the audiobook while I put up Christmas decorations. A really great way to start the season.

here's a pro writer tip

If you're thinking of writing a book about christmas or in a christmas setting or basically if this book you're thinking of writing has anything to do with christmas then just stop and don't waste your time because nothing you do will ever be able to top this, go find another theme for your book

slow-paced

so so so nostalgic.

Re-read - December 2018:
Upon re-reading this classic Christmas story, I'm lowering my rating to 3 stars. It's still a lovely tale but I couldn't help noticing the excessive moralist tone this time around which seems to be the norm in all the Christmas tales I've read this year

First read - December 2014:
I have lost count to the number of movie adaptations from this book I've seen . Yet, it was the first time I read it. What can I say? Such a lovely Christmas story!

I cannot help but loving Scrooge, such an interesting character!

I totally recommend this classic if you wanna get in the mood for Christmas. I'll surely re-read it in Christmas yet to come!

Thousands of readers and critics can't be wrong. A Christmas Carol captures the festivities perfectly. It summarizes what Christmas is really for, a time to forgive and rethink our life decisions, the story evokes the perfect atmosphere for that. It is both fun and dark, easy to read without loosing maturity.

Not to know that no space of regret can make amends for one life's opportunity misused!

"I wear the chain I forged in life," replied the Ghost. "I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it. Is its pattern strange to you?"

"Or would you know," pursued the Ghost, "the weight and length of the strong coil you bear yourself? It was full as heavy and as long as this, seven Christmas-eves ago. You have laboured on it since. It is a ponderous chain!"

No change, no degradation, no perversion of humanity, in any grade, through all the mysteries of wonderful creation, has monsters half so horrible and dread.

They are Man's...

This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased.

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!

I did much better emotionally reading this edition over the one I did twenty 27 years ago. I became so infuriated by the Scrooge character after I got a free ticket to a professional Theatre in Seattle, Act Theatre, that I majored in Drama at the UW also in Seattle and graduated second in my class. This was the second reading of this classic that I did so only because a friend wrote a favorable review after reading it for our mutual book club. Did I mention that I have cheated death at least three times and I am a walking miracle. So Tiny Tim's extended story lives through me. I got four "chuckles" and a blithe spirit visiting from Act Theatre's new casting of a seasoned classic play. Go to Seattle and see this play, you won't be disappointed. Time heals all wounds. And God bless us one and all.
