A tale about how the persecution of women has not changed in the last 600 years. Jenni Fagan’s poetic tragic true story of Geillis Duncan re-imagines a 21st century woman meeting Geillis. I was encapsulated by both the story and by the writing, it was somehow both poetry and prose all in one. I would have given it a higher rating but it did take me a while to get into the writing style and what Fagan was trying to say. Overall I found the punchy writing and description of the world in 16th century Scotland fascinating. I enjoyed the message she was trying to portray and most of all I think it’s a lesson that dismantling of the patriarchy is the end goal for equality and equity.
