This book made me want to cry my eyes out. It was so sad and shocking and ended giving me  a hollow feeling when I finished it.

The fantastical elements did not fully grasp me. Neither did the setting of the scene at the start of each chapter. I don’t fully understand what they were supposed to mean.

What really got to me was the beautiful writing and exploration of femininity and the reality of how misogyny affects women. Adding the context of the nonfiction elements of the witch trials made for a heartbreaking and shocking book that will stay with me for a while.

So much packed into a short package. Powerful messaging about the silencing of women, historically and currently. Good book.

Thoughts:

I think I expected something different than what I read, but I don’t regret it at all. This book contains so many important messages told through a retelling of Geillis Duncan’s witch trial death in 1591. The ending of this story was incredibly powerful and full of potent symbolism. Overall, a very good story.

This story would be hard enough to read without the knowledge that it was based on real events.

This tiny book made me feel so many things. Naturally it made me angry as witch trials always do. It made me sad, this was also to be expected. It also left me awestruck with the resilience of women.

There were so many lines in this book that were so powerful and struck right to the core. This is a story of witches, but it also isn't. It is a story of women. Of how far we have come, how far we haven't and how far we've yet to go.

I feel like I cannot do this tiny book justice in a review because this book wasn't only about words, it was about thoughts and feelings and belief and actions and consequences and morals. It isn't something I can review, it's something I carry with me now.

DID NOT FINISH: 40%

The narrator didn’t differentiate between voices for the two characters or the narration so it kind of all melded into one and it was difficult to follow as a result. Also, the story just didn’t engage me as I hoped it would.
