Sometimes I'm all confused with all the time traveling back to the same time--but I still like reading about Cassie, though she is starting to wear on me with all her reluctant hero stuff and not trying to learn to use her power.

I like Cassie and her bad luck since it reminds me of myself. I also think that I'm rooting for the war mage, despite the continued attempts Mircea made to win our hearts. He's one big, big, NOPE.

I had bought this book when I was away on a holiday a few years ago and never got around to read it because it was the third in a series, anyway, I said fuck it, I needed to read something light and funny and it delivered, though I must say there are some things lost in translation because there were times I was so lost and did not even know which character was speaking due to missuse of the punctuation marks related to direct speech (in Spanish we use dashes) and even when I did, sometimes the dialogue was so bizarre.
A good read, nothing more, but a terrible translation work. Probably not going to continue the series.

Best book of the series so far! Cassie is finally beginning to come into her powers and I liked the time travel aspect more in this one. (It actually made sense to the plot why she had to go to the past.)

It started out a bit confusing, jumping right into an action scene (That I didn't like. Underground and then in water. Yikes!) but it got better.

I appreciated her humor and there were several good lines.

The side characters really stole the book. Rafe was a good addition, as well as the magical kids, Radella (the Pixie) and the gargoyles. I liked that Francoise is now Cassie's friend and the development of her "friendship" with Pritkin. Pritkin was an even bigger part of this book and we learned a few of his secrets. ( Which was one of the best parts!)

Unfortunately, I still don't like the whole Geis thing (the entire plot of the book) and the Mircea going crazy storyline, but it wasn't as bad as I was afraid of. (Since Mircea from two weeks ago was in the book more.)

Everything ended rather well. Most people still want Cassie dead, but what else is new? At least that storyline is over.

Embrace the Night
3 Stars

Cassandra Palmer, the newly named Pythia, is on a quest to locate the Codex Merlini so that she can break the geas that binds her to the powerful and sexy Master Vampire, Mircea Basarb. Unfortunately for Cassie, not only are there numerous factions interested in the Codex for their own reasons, but the book itself has vanished from history and she will have to make use of all her powers in order to discover its whereabouts.

The story arc in this series is very compelling and the characters are intriguing. Unfortunately, neither of these manages to completely compensate for the problematic writing style and drawn out narration.

Events occur out of the blue and the details leading up to them are only forthcoming later on. The resulting effect is one of disorientation and confusion, and the feeling that something has been missed. Moreover, Cassie frequently goes of on long, tedious, boring and irrelevant tangents describing people and events from her past that have absolutely no connection to the story at hand. The pacing of the narrative slows down significantly as a result and it is difficult for the reader to retain focus, especially if one is listening to the audiobook as the mind starts to wander.

Nevertheless, there is some interesting character development and the twists and turns in the last 25% of the book make for particularly exciting reading. The revelations concerning Pritkin’s origins and his past make him the most interesting character in the series thus far, and his attract/repel relationship with Cassie is one of the highlights. The other is the continuation and resolution of the geas storyline as Cassie and Mircea finally complete what they started three books ago.

All in all, this series is rather hit and miss - good story and characters, but poor writing and execution. At this point, I’m willing to continue as I’m sufficiently interested in learning what happens with Cassie, Pritkin and Mircea.
