The Gene is a masterfully written book about genomics and genetics, encompassing a very detailed history of our understanding of genes and a glimpse into the good and the bad that could come from what we have learned so far. Mukherjee adds a poignant personal touch by weaving in the heritable behavioral health conditions in his family's medical history, the impacts they’ve had on them, and the future risks they hold for him.
I never really followed gene or DNA related news or articles. But this book opened up a whole new world to me. It's a big book but it keeps you interested and excited to read. I think everyone should have this book in their bookshelf.

Super long but beautifully written history of genetics, lots to think about.
Fascinating. A great deal of research went into this work and it shows. I thought it was presented in a way that everyone could understand the materials. Highly recommend.

What an excellent book. Good coverage not only of the science of genetics and the history of the science, but also the sociological impact that it has had and continues to have, and the ethical and moral dilemmas that it poses. I also admire the willingness to engage with a lot of difficult topics (eugenics, abortion, mental illness, gender identity, etc.) and address them with both honesty and compassion.
