After finishing Escaping from Houdini and Becoming the Dark Prince, I had a lot of expectations for Capturing the Devil. Mostly because a lot of things needed to be fixed after the disaster that had become Audrey Rose and Thomas’ relationship.

And it kind of met my expectations. At first, I was so happy to have our favourite couple back together, hunting for murderers from the past. But then, something happens. Something that I saw coming a mile away and was highly mad about.

The story changes its course from there and I finally remembered why I loved the first two books so much. Don’t worry I will keep this review spoiler free, but just know that the ending was worth all this trouble.

Especially because the plot and atmosphere were, as usual, immaculate. The connection between the first book and the last was the perfect way to conclude Audrey Rose and Thomas’ adventures. And it was all the more interesting when you learn that once again, Kerri Maniscalco wrote her work based on a true story.

It was still overall a good conclusion to an amazing series. Despite a weaker ending after such a strong beginning, I still can say without a doubt that Stalking Jack the Ripper has joined the group of my all-time favourite series and I will miss Audrey Rose and Thomas dearly!

It did supply some escapism. I really like maniscalcos writing. Her story telling was just a bit all over the place for this one. The first half was just a Victorian soap opera. Which even though I had a good time with it, considering this is a murder mystery about a career driven woman… idk it was just out of place. Then when we did get to actually investigating it was dreadfully obvious everything that was going on. We got physical traits of who the murderer was and then she met him multiple times and didn’t even consider that it could be him.

We got useless little snipers of all the characters from previous books.

I realized the reason I hated the escaping Houdini so much was because of Mephistopheles. He is so insufferable. I realized the most unpleasant time I was having with the book is when he was there.

But Thomas and Audrey despite being a little cheesy we’re cute most of the time and it was really fun being in this gothic little setting

I felt this book went a little off the path when compared to the rest of the series, meaning I felt it really focused on Audrey Rose and Thomas’ relationship more than anything. This, for me, made it especially hard to want to keep reading as I don’t get their fast paced relationship at all, nor do I like Thomas’ character. Also, I feel whenever they mention their age, it was an after thought and thrown in there to make these books deemed YA. And it made me cringe. Hard. But it makes more sense being ONLY 17 (!!!!) to jump into marriage Lolol ugh. Overall this series is a miss for me.
