Thomas Cresswell no me arrepiento de haberte conocido, always in my heart, yours sincerely, sharid

Capturing the Devil is the conclusion to the Stalking Jack the Ripper series, and I have to say I was kind of underwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong, it was a decent book - the murder just didn’t grip me.
The books tend to either follow a pattern of “love the romance, hate the murder” or “love the murder, hate the romance” and so either way I feel unsatisfied on either the murder front or the romance front. Thomas Cresswell always manages to add a few bonus points in the romance front simply for existing, so A+ on character development and continuation there. Audrey Rose’s impulsivity irks me and I find myself asking “why??” way too often for it to be cute.
Hunting Prince Dracula had both elements well done, which is why it has received my highest rating out of the four books. Escaping from Houdini and Capturing the Devil have the same rating, due to romance v murder equaling each other out, however on a purely enjoyment level - Escaping from Houdini is miles ahead of this book.
I guess what this all boils down to is whether or not I connected with and/or enjoyed the murder element of the novels (I don’t know what that says about me, but hey). For the final book I was expecting the murder to really go out with a bang, seeing as it was a culmination of all four books efforts - but I just didn’t care. I was too focused on when the romance bungle was going to sort itself out and how and the murder motivations just weren’t convincing enough for me.
I’m glad I read the series, but I wish it gripped me more in the final leg. That was the book where it needed to be unputdownable, but I just *shrug*

I really enjoyed the series as a whole. I like Audrey Rose and Thomas, and I did not dislike the romance in this book (although it is a lot heavier than in the rest of the series). It did read more like a romance at times and maybe that was because it was a bit longer that the rest. But that bothered me a lot less than the ending did. It felt... flat. Like, I expected something more. The revealing of Jack at the end was just bland for me. I could not have cared less.

This wasn't my favorite of the series but I thought the series as a whole was fun and ended well.
4.5⭐️ I am so sad this series is over!! I love these characters so much and I feel like I need a novella or a glimpse into their life. This book had some plot twists that connected back to the beginning of the series which I like.

Although the book took me a while to read, it was so good!! I really, thoroughly enjoyed it and everything it had to offer. I was angered by the thing Miss Whitehall, I didn’t really see how it fitted into the story, but it was a nice conflict for the characters to overcome. And the finale of the series. It was just breathtaking. I love these characters, and I love the play on H.H Holmes as Jack the Ripper. I think that is such a fun route, and as a history buff myself, it was great to explore that alternative route of thought.
