A completely different setting than I would have expected of a story subsumed under Romanticism. I'd expected European nature of the more organised, not necessarily civilised, kind, but instead Atala and René tell of the America, and the Indians, of the times in which the French still held a great part of the lands.

I can definitely see why this book is seen as related to Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther, especially with the explicative endnotes drawing specific parallels.

I must admit that even though I'm fond of detailed descriptions, especially when these are of nature, as that has a soothing effect, at times it did feel slightly too dweepingly. Additionally, especially the character of René felt over-dramatic, even to a hopeful romantic like myself. That is exactly why I was positively surprised by the ending.

If all be said and done, this is a masterpiece of evocative literature. The fact that I am so easily able to write about this, even though I'm more than ready for bed, as well as the strong feeling it left me with, despite my relative numbness due to still dealing with the remnants of thorough stress, shows for its power. Definitely a novel of all times, whether one likes it or not.

Horrible depictions of Indigenous people, a disgusting use of the ‘noble savage’ trope. Really frustrated I had to read this for school
