Okay so this isn’t the usual type of book I read. But I was really looking forward to listening to the audiobook as I love myths and legends, but the audiobook just droned in and in and I couldn’t get into. I ended up just using it to help me get to sleep.

I wanted to try an finish it bc It was so short but i just can’t go on. This book just wasn’t for me.

Oh well 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I really enjoyed this audio recording. I’d watched the TV production a while ago, so it was wonderful to go back to this conversation at a different point in my life. I loved this book, and felt very connected to Campbell’s knowledge and wisdom. It inspired me and brought a lot of energy and excitement to my spirit. I also found myself writing down numerous quotes from the conversation to sit with and take in after listening. Definitely recommend for spiritual explorers curious about the connection of all things. Loved exploring myth and how it has functioned over time to connect us to what we know and connect contain in language.

Very interesting. Makes connections across religions and mythologies. Difficult at times b/c I'm not great with philosophy but for the most part it's awesome to see how we're all more alike than we are different.

I tried a few times to read this. Kept going back to it. But it was just an interview about what he thought myth was and that was it. Every. Single. Chapter. Too many mentions of God, I had to give up in the end.

Awful book

I wanted to give this the full five stars, but its inconsistency is too glaring for that.

I should start by saying neither Joseph Campbell nor Bill Moyers intended for this to be a book. This book is simply the transcripts of a very long conversation the two had at Skywalker Ranch about mythology.

Having said that, this book wobbled from incredibly profound moments of epiphany and realization to weak mysticism shrouded in pretty words. This is the first work of Joseph Campbell that I've read, but it surely won't be the last. The man is certainly an authority on Mythology and its interpretation as well as its application to modern day. The conversation flows smoothly between the two learned men and it is easy to follow. The tapes of this conversation were actually recently released on Netflix (I only discovered this today coincidentally.) So you may choose to watch them instead of reading the book. It should be the same material verbatim.

The highest value that this book can offer is its reflection on modern day religion. Despite being blasphemic at the worst of times, Campbell and Moyers agree that Campbell's work only increases appreciation for one's own faith.
