4/5⭐️

•My Blurb•
Veyka is the twin that wasn’t supposed to survive and now she’s the queen who was never supposed to rule. Determined to gain revenge or die trying, Veyka starts on a course to ferret out a betrayer. Things only get more complicated when her betrothed, The Brutal Prince, arrives. The most powerful fae in thousands of years, Arran is intrigued by Veyka and has no problem using it to figure out her secrets. They grow closer and discover more about each other, but Veyka’s secrets have dangerous consequences and discovering them could change everything!

•My Thoughts•
Hello shifters and fae, stabby FMCs and powerful/possessive MMCs!! I saw @ashleysreadingrainbow post about this one and I dropped my TBR like it was hot and RAN to download it. Sometimes you just KNOW you’re going to enjoy something and I was right. The pacing in the first half of the book felt a little slow but most of that is the nature of the first book in a fantasy series, there’s world building and ground work to be laid to set up the series. I was fascinated with the way the author wove in the legend of Arthur and Excalibur and made it her own - non-spoilery-spoiler alert, it’s VERY cool. I loved the magic system and the world. The characters are layered and relatable. Our MCs have so much tension and while their physical relationship wasn’t a slow burn, their emotional relationship totally was and I ate it up. I’m considering jumping right into book 2 that just released in mid December because that CLIFFHANGER WAS INSANE.

This dark, steamy fantasy reimagines the Arthurian legend with a fae twist. The story centers around Veyka Pendragon, who unexpectedly becomes queen after her brother's murder. I was captivated by the intricate political intrigue and the murder mystery at the heart of the plot. Veyka, a strong, physically imposing character, breaks the mold of traditional female leads, which I found refreshingly empowering. The spicy and frequent romance may not be for everyone, but I appreciated it. However, I struggled with Veyka's focus on revenge and her sometimes unlikable character. The book ends on a cliffhanger, but I'm intrigued to see what happens next.

I really enjoyed this. It was a genuinely inventive Arthurian legend retelling. I liked the MCs and especially the MMCs POV. Also, good way to make the older magic interesting. If you’re into it there is a decent amount of spice, definitely not a YA.

I liked the plot and the emotional baggage and healing the characters did, but it was verrrrryyy lusty even when there were serious emotional conversations going on and I didn’t like that.

Wow, I truly could not put this book down! I devoured this book, like neglected-all-responsibilities-to-read-this-in-two-days devoured. I haven’t read a King Arthur retelling quite like this. I really liked the uniqueness of it. I’m docking this .5 stars just for how much the FMC’s curviness is sexually described and how often the word “female” is used. Maybe that’s a personal preference, but this is my review :-)

The plot was really intriguing. The fae court can only have one heir, and as twins were birthed, and Veyka being second born and without powers, was locked away and tortured by her mother in hopes to instill powers in her. Once Arthur become king, he frees Veyka and locks mommy dearest away. That is until he dies and Veyka is betrothed to the Brutal Prince. I really enjoyed their chemistry, while I was a bit confused why Veyka hated Arran, I can chalk it up to her PTSD, hatred for being crowned Queen, and him being in closest proximity. Their enemies to lovers plot line was great. I thought the second go around of the enemies part could have been dragged out a bit, but by that time I *spoliers* already knew they were mates so I understand why all was forgiven so quick.

Veyka is a badass FMC, whom I obviously don’t believe is powerless. I’m sure she has *spoilers again* mind reading capabilities and is of decent that had not been seen for hundreds of years. But we gotta get that chosen one trope in here some how. Also, what happened to the mom? I need to know where she has been

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, will definitely be recommending to those who like ACOTAR, Legendborn, any type of smutty-fae-romantasies, and will hopefully be approved for an eARC of book 2 because that cliffhanger
