I finished this book at 2 am today and I'm finally emotionally stable enough to write a review. I may enter a reading slump because I simply don't think I'll ever read a book that is better than this. I loved everything about it. The main thing, of course, is the relationship which was SO amazing. Like I loved the characters separately and together like oh my gosh I would read a thousand books about them. A classic enemies to lovers with forced proximity if you will. A classic king and lionheart relationship. I'm making a playlist with them now. I'm obsessed I'm scaling the walls I'm running in circles like I can't stop thinking about this book I'm twisting it around in my mind much like a rotisserie chicken. I love this book with literally all my heart but I'm being sooooo normal about it.

It’s MUCH heavier on the romance than the fantasy. Reads a bit like a fic. Great on the character dynamics a bit light on the worldbuilding/plot. Narration was a lil annoying at times but still enjoyable
I had to rescue myself from this annoying prince. His self-centeredness and the constant moods he dumps on everyone around him were unbearable.
If I wanted to spend time with an egotistical drunk who mansplains the most obvious things in the most meandering and boring way possible, I’d just talk to my colleague on Monday morning. I don’t need a fantasy book for that.
25% in – and nothing had happened. Nope, not for me.
Will come back to this later 😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️

This was such a sweet, slow-burn romance alongside a political intrigue conspiracy. The vibes reminded me a lot of Winter’s Orbit, tbh.
Kadou and Evemer had such distinct voices and characterization, with lots of backstory colored in throughout. The depiction of Kadou’s anxiety and panic attacks was handled so thoughtfully. Evemer’s hard outer shell slowly caved to his soft warm gooey center. Their relationship is so subtly developed, that you almost don’t realize they’re in love with each other until they do. This book was 80% yearning, and I fucking loved it.
There was a lot more plot and world building than I anticipated, but it felt pretty well-balanced until the end, when everything wrapped up a too easily/neatly so the romance could be center-stage. I wish there had been a bit more on-page conversation between Kadou and Evemer about their relationship and feelings as well, since it felt like mostly we were in each of their heads.
