3.5 stars
Overall forgettable unfortunately. The main conflict just sort of fizzles away to be replaced by a new one that feels unresolved. The end of the book just seemed like a place the author decided to stop. Interesting characters but overly long.

I am doing a rare thing and rounding up on my star rating for this one since I can't really settle on a number between 3.5 and 4.
I love everything about this book, truly, and yet the whole time I was reading, there was a feeling in the back of my mind like, wish it was ... more. Can't really explain it better than that. Nothing, from the plot, to the characters, to the setting, felt like it turned the dial to 100%. There were also some niggles I had with pacing, a fair amount of repetetive navel-gazing, and characters totally setting aside important information in favor of talking about sex. There was, imo, a slight imbalance between the plot and the romance (too much romace; too little plot) that kinda dragged the whole thing down.
I know I sound like I'm shitting on this book, but it's only because my feelings are complicated, okay? I really did like it quite a lot. I'll probably even re-read it. There will just, unfortunately, be the ghost of a better book lingering in my brain when I do.
ALSO, the author mentions in the acknowledgements that they were originally planning to kill a certain characer off, and ... yeah! I could tell! It would have been very sad, but I wish it had happened. The stakes in the story were so low from the reader's perspective that a little death might have done some good. But I am also a miserable bastard who loves to suffer, so!

Holy moly, this book was lovely. It incorporated a lot of elements that I just adore in my romance novels, with the bonus of a really engaging cast of characters. They're all so vibrant, and you really get a strong sense of the community in the palace and the individual voices of Evemer and Kadou (also I would die for Evemer tbh.) The romance plot itself is very much a slow burn, but it feels justified and doesn't slow down the pace at all. As a character reader, I kind of zone out through the plot bits and didn't get too invested in the whole mystery and I think that was fine.

I loved this book SO much, it was everything and had me giggling and kicking my feet.
I just couldn’t get into this one. The characters weren’t bad and the romance will be very interesting to people who like a slow-burn knight/prince trope. That’s just not me. Will say, there’s a great scene a few pages where I left off to demonstrate the depth of loyalty that I did enjoy.
