This book was a continuation of the book before it(The Sparrow), and to it's credit it definitely fleshes it out more. It takes some of the themes started and continues the idea. It did not make me retroactively enjoy the previous book more, nor did it even reach the same highs that the previous book did for me. This book struggled telling a split story(even more so then the last book) that made for a little confusion as to what was happening where. It struggles with the same issues the previous book had for me - overly abusive to our protagonist for no real story benefit, loose biblical allusions but repeatedly explicitly telling you they're allusions, aliens respond the same way humans do etc.

Definitely a worthy continuation of The Sparrow— I was concerned that the first book didn’t feel like it needed follow-up, and this would feel extraneous, but ultimately I liked this a lot.
