This is probably 2.5 stars. Charles Dickens forces in a happy ending, which I'm sure was well received by readers at the time, but I feel a darker ending would have served the story better.
Never hurts to re-visit the classics. The journey can be a bit dull at times but being well-read is a virtue worth pursuing, imho.
Some of the first Dickens I have read. I enjoyed the tone of the story being told for the very first time. As if he was writing me a letter to tell me the story of his life. There were some good life lessons throughout the book and some good laughs as well.

there never were such characters… you can forgive the plot for being a bit contrived, for it brings these people in constant and wonderful conversation together
I love Dickens' characterization! How could I ever forget Uriah Heep or Mr. McCawber, having read this book now? I much preferred this to Great Expectations. It has more levity, redemption, and moments of irony that made me laugh as I read.
