"Every last person we kill is for family. If we don't kill them, they kill us. It is the way of the world. It is self-defense."
I'm not going to lie, I'm slightly disappointed. The great Donatella has been reduced to this book. Children of Vice ended in a goddamn bang. I was ready to throw my book and smash it because that cliffhanger was nuts. It ended with Donatella and all I thought was that I hated her and at the same time she was baddass.
I gave this four stars instead of three because it had elements that were amazing. There's going to be a spinoff series about this. I'm hoping that we'll see more of Donatella because she deserved better. She was mean, but she didn't show she was truly the daughter of mafia royalty.
"It's a tragedy really. Being as handsome as I am yet surrounded by women who prefer power instead."
"Power instead?" she replied. "You speak as if you are better than having power. What can you do that my gaining power can't?"
"I can keep you warm at night?"
"I'm rich. I can afford a blanket made with the fur of polar bears to keep me warm."
I want to give this a better review, but I'm not sure what to say.
Gabriel was secretive. He has a plan and that included getting Dona. Unfortunately, he's quite aware that it isn't going to be easy. He's prepared to work for it because he needs her to get what he wants. He's not ruthless, but he is determined.
Donatella is the only daughter of Bloody Mel and Liam, The Mad-Hatter. She's hungry for power, but realized she's getting lower on the totem pole as the days go on. She's not capable of killing her family, but she needs more out of life than being Ethan Callahan's sister.
What saved this book is the goddamn ending. I am thoroughly pissed at J.J. McAvoy the last dialogue is what got me. I. Am. Furious. Reading Ruthless People I thought it was going to end in a HEA, but it was a mafia HEA which was unexpected. Now McAvoy takes the trust I put into her, again, and takes someone away from me. I'm about to consume Children of Redemption because I'm angry and invested in these batshit crazy people.
Many people like to believe they are the master of their own fates, that nothing controls them. But in reality, fear and need to survive ruled over everything in their lives.
waiting for the spin-off of the spin-off. ahahah

This series just gets better and better! I loved the introduction of Gabriel and all of the mystery surrounding him plus all the ways in which he pushed buttons!! I did not ever expect all the twists that came out of that. It was so interesting to get into Dona’s POV so much more and see what makes her tick. Plus seeing little bits and pieces from the second generation and how this new family
operates and how everyone fits in. That beginning though had me shook and that end even more so! I have so many questions and cannot wait to see where this story leads!! Holy man what an exciting read! I can’t stop won’t stop!

First off - Joel Leslie is perfection - as always. On to rest of the review.
Donna really annoyed me. Frankly how can a person who has never felt love and almost prides herself on it, write books and declare to be a authority on it. Didn't get that at all. Her ball busting got to be tiring. I like Gabriel, but frankly I'm getting sick of these kids (Ethan and Donna) treating everyone but their own like shit. They really aren't as invincible as they claim to be. Had to wait too damn long for Donna and Garbriel to seal the deal. Only one hour left in audio after all that dancing around. So, damn - I'm disappointed, but will soldier onto Wyatt's story.
But that ending...I KNEW IT!!!!! finally, nobody will ever hold a candle to them.

If beauty was a woman’s armor, I had more than enough to slay a dragon.
I honestly have no words. This book was NOT what I was expecting. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I actually really really loved it and Dona. Can’t wait to see what comes of her in the future. I think that this book is definitely a beginning to something I am more than ready for even though i didn’t know it was coming. Also I’ve seen many people complaining, but this story makes sense to me. Like 100% the only way to work this out without a ton of blood and anger!
I will say that everything in this book isn’t pretty, and some of it truly confused me, but I trust this author. She hasn’t failed me with this series yet, and I know that whatever she has planned will be even better than what we thought was happening.
This story was mafia and plot building heavy. The romance is light and different, but that is this series and it’s predecessor. It’s unique and different in so many ways. What I will say is go into this one without expectations, because whatever you’re expecting will be blown the heck away.
