Oh, so this is a *third* of a book. Whereas the previous entries worked a little better as standalone novellas.

This one doesn't wrap up nicely like all the others, it left me repeating in disbelief "It doesn't end!"

I guess on to the next one to see what happens between Pen and Nikys, and he thick headed brother Adelis. This story has Pen taken by surprise: capture, imprisonment, attempted murder, running for their lives. Quite fast moving.

There is probably a bigger scheme happening that will need to be unraveled, let alone watching the love bloom between Pen and Nikys.

Snippets that make me chuckle:

"No, keep looking! Des demanded. For all the stares you’ve been sneaking at his sister’s ample backside, you can give us this. He’s not going to object."

“Des!” He convulsed to a sitting position. “What, you’re the one who’s been mooning after her hips for the past fortnight. So do something about it.”

Excellent little story with Penric -I only wish it was longer!

If the previous two books read like self contained almost detective stories, this installment of the Penric and Desdemona series feels like a particularly action oriented story arc from a longer complicated novel. There's a lot that isn't explained (the death of the Princess archdivine for example) and the book ends with a great deal up in the air. This Penric is in Lymond mode rather than Lord Peter mode- escaping traps and creating them, sacrificing himself to save others.
