An absolutely brilliant read - a series I couldn’t recommend enough to anyone that enjoys a complex, thrilling bit of hijinks
On the one hand I really liked this book, on the other I also had some issues
What I liked:
Sabetha. Up until now I was kind of annoyed at her character but she actually did live up to her description! I usually hate the trope of mediocre (but still powerful) man pines after gorgeous woman who he has a history with and then the woman shows up and is…. Not what we were promised. And Locke was getting annoying with him being pathetically lovesick.
The whole secret election arc was also really interesting and I loved learning more about the Bondsmagi!
What I had issues with:
The pacing. Somehow this book was too short and too long. Maybe it was because of the constant flashbacks, which I thought were too many. I would have liked to spend more time in the present, even though the flashbacks did flesh out the relationships more.
There was a story twist in this book that I decidedly did not like; it was kind of foreshadowed but the reveal felt… empty and I personally do not like the implications that it carries. However, it is mentioned in the book that it could be a fluke so here’s hoping.
Can’t wait to read about the schemes Locke and Jean are going to concoct and the trouble they will surely get into in Emberlain next!

Not as good as the first two, but still a very good book. Hope he finishes the fourth soon.

Very good, but compared to the previous two I didn't find the plot that pertains only to this particular book to be all that great. The present day heist felt a bit underwhelming. The one in the past was a bit better, but could have used less of the performance part in my opinion.
It seemed like the Republic of Thieves book plot took back stage to the additions to the overarching Gentleman Bastard series lore, which I thought was mostly excellent. It sets up the next novel (whenever that comes out) very well, but I didn't feel like I got my fix like I did with the previous two.

***Despite this review and my frustrations I am still a devout Scott Lynch fan and am eagerly awaiting book four!!***
This book took me almost two months to finish. TWO MONTHS! I can't even think back to a time that two months was an acceptable amount of time to read a book in... Crazy I tell you!!
It took me that long for various reasons, but partly because this book didn't hook me like the first two did. I was ready for more schemes and sneakiness and SABETHA!!!
But... Turns out this was way more about politics and Bondsmagi, two things I seriously couldn't care about any less than I already do. It made the book drag, and not even the fun parts could make up for it.
Three stars because Sabetha was cool and I really got her point of view and there were some little bits of the scheming I enjoyed, but three stars because the Bondsmagi are boring and do things for no reason except to be complicated.
Oh, and that big reveal? Unexpected (obviously), but a little annoying. It made all the info dumping make sense, but now there is MORE Bondsmagi shit I've got to read about now. :/

The book on its own was fantastic. I love getting to witness the banter and charm Locke has with Jean and just about everyone else he interacts with. Finally meeting Sabetha and getting to see their history in the flashbacks was worth the read alone. I loved the flashbacks for so many reasons, Sabetha and Locke, Jean and Jenora, and Calo and Galdo.
Overall I think it’s a great story, however, the end falls a little flat for me. I love Locke being an ordinary guy that does extraordinary things with his practiced talentso I’m not too keen on where things are going after the big reveal of who he might actually be. I liked the subtle role magic played in the story and feel like the series is heading toward a bigger role with magic and the Falconer and I think I might miss the simplicity of thieves getting in over their heads and having to cunningly get themselves out of whatever mess they’ve created.
