You want a lesson, boy? If you find yourself being born, climb back in as quick as you can, because life's a bottomless feast of shit.

Another hit out of the park with this one. I just want to read all the adventures of The Gentleman Bastards. Mr Lynch could you please publish book 4? Pleeeeease?

Oh, this series. This delightful series. It's strange that a story whose plot I am not that invested it can be completely saved by its characters. There doesn't seem to be that much in terms of stakes and Sabetha as a character is something that I have seen before. But the interactions between Locke and Jean are the best and I liked the flashbacks (though I kept waiting for a big plot twist to happen that never did). The dialogue is once again very good and I enjoy the banter. There are some lines that I wish I had written down somewhere so that I could use them in daily conversation. That way people would think I'm witty. I don't think I enjoyed this book as much as the previous two but I will no doubt continue the series.

sooooooo fun!! alternating chapters telling one story of the past, and one of the present. both entertaining and thrilling. loved getting to know the character that was often referenced in book 1 & 2, and at times wished that we could just get her POV. although i'll admit that after basically having a cast of all male characters in the first two books, her inclusion in this one felt like an afterthought. BUT good news is, after an 8 year wait, book #4 is set to release in october of 2021!! how exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! surely i can go read it now.. surely........ it must be out.. it must..

It's Gentleman Bastards, an easy five stars. I think this one probably has my favorite flashbacks out of the series. The way the teenager GBs are portrayed is perfect in how cringingly realistic it is. 😂 Sabetha's constant need to feel special and offended, Locke being a simp, the Sanzas being horny underachievers, and Jean... Jean's normal at least. 😂 Chains may not be a real priest of Perelandro, but he sure as hell is a saint for putting up with them for as long as he did. It was nice to see him again.

I really enjoyed the modern-day con as well. Locke and Jean are always at their best when they have to work against someone just as clever as they are, and who better than Sabetha? The contrast between adult and teenage Locke is pretty good. It was nice that he developed some iota of self-respect.

Jean and Locke also have one of the best partnerships that I've ever seen in a series. They're not interchangeable equals who just so happen to enjoy each others' company, or completely co-dependant. They have their specific roles that make up for the other's weaknesses, and you never get the sense that they couldn't do this on their own, just that it would be harder for them, and they'd have to do it in very different ways.

Five stars.

I hoped I'd love this as much as the first book, and maybe a little more than the second, but sadly, I was slightly disappointed.

This book does not centre around some big scheme like the first two, but rather attempts to incorporate politics into the story, accompanied by some minor schemes. It just felt like it was missing something. Maybe it's because I was left a bit confused by the political workings of the world, or maybe I was just hoping for something more, but this did not feel similar to the previous two books.

I mean, of course I still loved Locke and Jean as the main characters, and it was nice to go deeper into the whole relationship dynamic between Locke and Sabetha, but that did not really save this book for me.

At first I enjoyed how the main story alternated with the interludes, but as soon as they got to the part with the play, I found it got a bit boring. Moreover, the whole climax of the main storyline also felt somewhat weak. I did like the idea of Locke's mysterious past playing a bigger role in this story, but the way it was handled, once again, left me wanting more, and thus disappointed me.

Overall, it was fine, and the epilogue definitely sets up nicely for a potential next book in the series (if it'll ever be written, that is). If book 4 is ever released, I'll definitely be reading it, and hoping I'll enjoy it a lot more than this one.
