The Republic of Thieves starts off strong, directly continuing the story of the previous installment. Quickly though, the tonality changes completely.

The story, this time, is much more character driven and finally ties some loose ends and connects the dots, like with the relationship between Locke and Sabetha that gets a few particularly shining and moving moments.

Besides this, the plot revolves, almost in its entirety, around political intrigues and although I overall enjoyed the pranks and trickery from the involved parties, it did drag on a bit.

Parallel to the main story, we also get a large, segmented flashback, describing in detail an important episode from the past of the Gentleman Bastards, which I enjoyed as a welcome breather and a change of pace at times. It also very much contributed to the book's character development so I believe it earned its rightful place in it.

Even though I would say it was the weakest book in the series, it sets up the stage for future ones (please Mr. Lynch!) with an excellent and bone-chilling ending. The world is changing and events are going to unfold on a much grander scale from now on and I am really scared for the main cast of characters.

Warum hat Locke den Plot so wenig gesteuert? Ich hätte gedacht die Liebesgeschichte wird spannender und mit mehr Verrat. Wann Teil 4?
