Laurell K Hamilton really has a way of writing great settings/worlds and characters. There are always a ton of characters to her novels but somehow they tend to be (mostly) individuals. The settings/worlds are also always good. They are complex and fascinating to think about. This story is a fun read and has great characters. The beginning is always a little slow for me but once you get about a third of the way through the main story picks up and takes off. Warning though, there's a lot of sex in this series, so if you don't like/can't tolerate heavy sex scenes then this series isn't the series for you. The one thing that bothers me about Hamilton's writing is the fact that she sometimes forgets to finish plot lines. I understand that the story is complex, in fact I appreciate it, but in every book (almost) there is usually one thing brought up that is never actually resolved/gotten around to. It's usually little things, but still, it leaves you wondering. Anways, fun series, great setting and characters, just a lot of sex.

See this is like a trash novel that's good lmdao like there's so many holes in this woman's logic and desires and what she wants and just basic repetitive writing but also I got this far so it was steamy and nice and I love reading about queens and royal guards but I'm just getting sick of it and I don't wanna read the subsequent baby making
First smut scene is rape (which is brushed off, because she’d “seen worse don’t to others). Second smut scene dubious consent. Not worth it for me.
